AUBURN, Wash. (Sept. 25, 2017)—Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), the industry leader in the certification of gluten-free products and food services, is presenting a new study about the threshold for gluten grains in non-gluten grains at two food industry events—the AOAC Annual Meeting & Exposition and Cereals 17. The AOAC Annual Meeting & Exposition, to be held Sept. 24-27 in Atlanta, brings together scientists from around the world to discuss science-based solutions through the development of microbiological and chemical standards. Cereals 17, the international annual meeting of the AACC, will be held Oct. 8-11 in San Diego and draws a global audience from the grain-based foods industry.
GIG is finalizing a new study that establishes the number of gluten-containing grains that are allowed in non-gluten grains in order to meet the 10 ppm gluten threshold of GIG’s gluten-free certification program, the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). The study also examines the feasibility of the proposed threshold in oat processing operations.
GFCO, accredited to ISO 17065, not only certifies that a company’s processes meet GFCO’s standards but also that the products produced meet a 10 ppm-or-less gluten standard—stricter than the 20 ppm required by the FDA for gluten-free labeled products. Products certified by GFCO carry the GF logo—a symbol of trust for consumers and retailers that a product is truly gluten free.
